Summary of Book

80 Proof Lives is a young adult, fiction novel, set in Quincy, FL, during the summer of 1976. Fla Frye is a 15-year-old girl who is raised by a disabled, alcoholic, and emotionally distant mother. The mother’s drink of choice is beer, and she runs up a very large tab. In order to pay it off, she forces Fla to clean house for the queen of the bootleg beer business, and local madam, Miss Lipstick. Fla is a loner and has very low self-esteem. She finds her escape through books. During that fateful summer, she encounters numerous colorful characters who suffer from one vice or another, but who help Fla discover some life-changing things about herself and steer her to a destiny that she didn’t think was possible. The story is a cautionary tale and addresses themes that many students can identify with, including forgiveness, tolerance, addictions, sex, bullying and love.
